Making the most of your dark side

You may think that the perfect employee is creative, punctual, loyal, efficient and a great team player but according to a new report by New Scientist magazine, the darker side of our character traits can have some very positive angles career wise. So if you are an office gossip, you are probably an ace networker; laziness can be associated with incubating creativity and even being late for work can be viewed positively - people who consistently find it difficult to get out bed often work much more productively later on in the day. Prone to mood swings? Then you're more than likely very creative while arrogance is linked to self belief and good leadership. Those of us who are accused of being over emotional usually have better memories and aggression can help keep stress levels down. Even telling the odd porky has its advantages as according to the report, deception is a necessary evil - as with complete honesty, our social systems would break down. It's all very interesting food for thought but for a slightly more orthodox approach Regan & Dean is planning a series of career advice guides aimed at helping you to present yourself in the best light - and make the most of what you have to offer. We'll be summarising these in future issues and you will also be able to find them on our website by clicking on http://www.regananddean.com/guides.php

Events professionals - stress is alive and well

In our last issue, we reported on the fact that many of you are leaving the agency world behind and moving into corporate roles, citing long hours and stress as the main reason. However, much of the feedback we have received since that report tells us that …surprise surprise - stress is endemic on both sides of the fence - both in-house and agency. Well stress may be alive and well but it seems that many of you see this as a positive rather than a negative. As one production manager put it: "If you don't like the heat get out of the kitchen - the nature of the job demands long hours and stress - it's an every day occurrence - not a pathological disease and most people in the industry that I know thrive on the surge of adrenalin that a certain amount of pressure can give." What's clear to us is that the industry attracts high energy people - tough cookies who expect a high demand environment. Hours can be very long and it is not unusual to be putting in 12-14 hour days in the lead up to an event. As for stress, the last word should go to one very contented Project Manager who said: "Unfortunately the modern manager always has an 'out clause' because the 'trendy' stress syndrome means as the going gets tough the not so tough get out!" Spring clean your career plan

Did you know that research has suggested that most of us will spend more time planning our annual holiday than we will planning our career? One of the most important features of career planning is establishing where you are now, where you want to be and in what time frame - and how you are going to get there. Sometimes you see someone at the top and chalk it up to luck. It is true that part of success is being in the right place at the right time. But planning and being savvy about the opportunities that come your way are what most great careers are built on. If you feel that you've lost your way then maybe it's time for a spring clean in order to get back on track. Regan & Dean has come up with the following advice:

  • Identify what factors are important to you; build up a picture of your priorities in terms of skills, interests and what motivates you.
  • Establish where you are now - it's easy to lose sight of what you may have achieved so far. And look forward to what you may want to achieve in the future in order to ascend to that next rung on the career ladder.
  • Recognise what might hold you back and identify how to fill any gaps in your experience, whether this be through training or additional support from senior management.
  • Don't be over ambitious when goal setting. Be realistic in your expectations and know your limitations.
  • Aim to do one career-building task every week. This could include furthering your skills, increasing your professional network, learning more about your industry, or talking to someone else about your future possibilities.
  • Think about self image and getting yourself known - not just in your own organisation but in the business world at large. Ask people in your preferred career about how they got where they are. If you hear enough of these stories, you'll discover what you need to do and how to position yourself.
  • Shape your career, don't let it shape you. Decide what you want your career to be and make your opportunities match that. Sometimes, you have to take the role employers give you. But you can also make roles for yourself by acquiring projects that can further your career.
  • Your recruitment agency can play a larger role too - they'll know what's going on in the market giving you a useful benchmark, and give you informed advice on what steps you might need to take to get to where you want to be .....

Good egg or bad egg - which one are you?

There's been plenty of research recently suggesting that PAs and office support professionals are indispensable - that many of you are not afraid of those 'Sugaresque' words, "You're fired" and that generally you're the best thing since sliced bread. But how do you know? What is it that makes you a great employee? Keeping ahead of the game in your current role will automatically help you shine when looking for a new one so here's the Regan & Dean acid test:

  • Am I loyal? - This counts for a lot in today's marketplace and always speaking positively about your employer is one of the measures of corporate loyalty.
  • Am I flexible? - Be willing to take on extra responsibilities and don't ever refuse to do something just because it happens not to be in your job description.
  • Do I take initiative? - Look around for things that need to be done - don't wait to be asked. Suggest new ways of doing things if it's appropriate and come up with new ideas - especially those that are likely to involve cost savings!
  • Would I want to recruit an employee like me? Really think about this one - if you turn up for work at 8.55 am when all your colleagues are there at 8.30am, would you consider yourself for promotion, extra responsibility, supervisory roles? Possibly not so lead by example and do to your employer as you would want done to yourself.
  • Would I want to work with people like me? - Take time out to help junior colleagues - suggest a mentoring system if there isn't one in place - it's a great thing to have on your CV.
  • Am I motivated? - Appear eager to be at work each day and make sure that you are keen to keep learning. Although your role may be quite specialised, you need to have that willingness to learn and move with the times. Things never stand still and what you know today may be of no use to the employer of tomorrow so make sure you keep up to date.

Motivate me!

While it may be a truism in today's consumer driven society that many people are motivated by the carrot and stick method of earning more money, it seems that amongst marketing and creative professionals, the 'work life balance' issue has meant that the carrot can now take many other forms. According to a recent salary and benefits survey by mad.co.uk, 57 per cent of respondents are looking to change jobs this year. Consequently, retention of talent will be a key issue for employers and, according to the survey; employees rate a generous holiday entitlement extremely highly, followed by flexible working hours and a contributory pension. Interestingly, company cars and car allowances were perceived as relatively unimportant by over half of respondents. Our own feedback from candidates seems to agree with this picture - over half of the marketing professionals we spoke to said that 'lifestyle' rewards such as extended holidays, red letter day experiences and sabbaticals mean more than bonuses and pay rises. "In the last decade, the world has got decidedly smaller" said one respondent. "Consequently, exotic holidays are now the norm rather than the exception - often two weeks isn't enough if you are traveling to the other side of the world." In an environment where the best talent is highly sought after, it seems that companies are beginning to respond by looking at more innovative ways of recruiting and retaining their staff. To coin a phrase or two - "money can't buy you happiness" and "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy - or Jill a dull girl!
