Flexible Benefits - All in a Day’s Work

A recent survey has shown that flexible working hours are, believe it or not, often more preferable to a pay rise. It’s appropriate, then, that a new piece of legislation championed by Government Minister Beverley Hughes allows all you workaholics the right to request a certain degree of flexibility to your working day. However, this emphasis on reaching a good work-life balance goes much further than just flexible hours; a quick glance at the range of perks now being offered by some of our clients shows that they don’t need a piece of legislation to remind them to give their staff the rewards they deserve. Here’s just a small selection of what’s on offer:

  • A day off on your birthday
  • Bankable hours that you can reclaim in following week
  • Purchasable additional holiday days
  • 2 days off to prepare for your wedding and a contribution to put towards the honeymoon
  • ‘Duvet Days’ - the chance to use up to 2 days holiday by calling your Manager before the time you were due to start work and requesting the day off at the last moment.
  • An employee lead learning programme of £200 per year for either training or fitness programmes
  • Hotel concessions
  • Free lunches
  • Free gym membership
  • Free counselling service
  • Up to £1000 interest free loan to buy yourself a bicycle so you can cut down your carbon footprint.

So when thinking about your next career move, it’s good to look at the full range of benefits being offered and ensure that you look at the overall package on offer.

Web 2.0 - An Advertising Revolution

Only a year ago if someone had asked you whether you were a ‘blogger’ you might have run away in disgust, but now it seems anyone who doesn’t know their MySpace from their YouTube might as well be living underneath a stone. The Arctic Monkeys may be the best known people to have used the web’s viral capabilities to create a word of mouth phenomenon, but now businesses too are making the most of these new online social networks with a variety of clever marketing and advertising operations. A career in internet based advertising or marketing will allow you unrivalled scope for creativity, as demonstrated in BBC Radio 1’s groundbreaking ‘MusiCubes’ constructor, which has been recognised in a number of online advertising awards. Users of the BBC website are invited to construct a virtual cube made up of their favourite musical genres and put it on their MySpace page. The result is a piece of self-publishing advertising - the user is happy to show MySpace buddies their musical tastes whilst at the same time conveying Radio 1’s brand identity to an entirely new network of people.

However, three consecutive years of 60% year-on-year growth in online marketing means that many companies are struggling to find skilled staff to fill positions. Employers are sometimes forced to choose between talented, digital experts abreast of the new technologies or people with a grip on marketing and the vital experience of handling clients, when in reality it is a combination of these talents that is needed.

Most of our marketing positions are beginning to incorporate more and more web-based business, and this only looks set to grow.

A Problem Solved...

In our last newsletter we covered how to beat those new job nerves, but this month we’re going to offer a few handy tips to help with problems that even the most confident employee might face. A career, after all, is like life - it has its ups and downs. All problems have to be worked through, but rarely is it the end of the world. Above all the best piece of advice is not to rush into any hasty decisions, but here are some more of Regan and Dean’s top tips:

  • Calmly analyse any issues away from the stress of work - it will help you see your problem in a new light.
  • If you find yourself at the end of your tether with a job, speak to your manager and be honest. A problem shared is a problem halved.
  • Speak to your recruitment consultant - he or she will be able to advise you of the current job market.
  • If after this you still feel you want to leave, look for another job whilst you are still in your current one. You will be less likely to rush into another role if you are still employed.
  • Be tactful in your resignation if you are offered another job. It’s always handy to have a good reference up your sleeve, so be appreciative of the skills you have learned and thank your employer for their contribution to your career.
  • Be careful of becoming despondent and inefficient after handing in your notice - your employer is most likely to remember you by your most recent behaviour.

If moving jobs is an option you’re considering to solve your problem then, for alternative solutions.

Crackdown on Composite Companies

As many of our candidates in events and marketing opt to work as freelancers within composite companies, it may be worth your while to plan ahead for a new legislation change targeting ‘managed services companies’ set to come into effect after the budget. Those of you who work for ‘umbrella companies’ should be fine, however if you have been working under a managed services company, the Chancellor’s policy changes leave you with a number of decisions to make. Clients of managed services companies may decide to choose from the following options:

  • Set up as a personal services company. In which case you must ask a number of careful questions to ensure you won’t fall under IR35.
  • Choose to stay with your current company but under an umbrella strategy, however you must be sure they know how to operate correctly.
  • Move to an established umbrella company
  • Choose to seek permanent employment

Moreover it doesn’t just affect individuals. It has been suggested that the Inland Revenue will place the responsibility with hirers if they have trouble tracking down any collapsed managed services company, and as such these companies may be liable to account for contractors from up to six years previously. We aren’t lawyers, but it seems it would be in everyone’s best interest to get a head start on these legislation changes before April creeps up on you.

Just a Secretary? Not Any More

Whereas the traditional PA’s day’s work may have largely revolved around diary management, administrative tasks and making the odd cup of tea, the role of today’s Personal Assistant couldn’t be further from it. Nowadays the PA’s role tends to involve anything from carrying out specific projects and research to being actively involved in the decision-making process, and so they have increasingly become an integral part of how any business is run. The ability to quickly adapt and handle any project which is thrown at you is obviously important here, and as such it is often the case that no one day is the same as the next!

"As a Personal Assistant you often need to have the most extensive knowledge of how an organisation is run," one of our PAs told us, "you can be asked to research all manner of subjects at a minute’s notice so you need to know your company’s aims and objectives as well as who the key personnel are, both inside and outside the company. I’ve got to the stage now where I feel quite capable of covering for my boss if he is away on business for a few days, and this added responsibility makes the role extremely rewarding."

Confessions of... a Conference Producer

If you want to work in a fast paced and dynamic industry, have an enquiring mind, and enjoy working with a variety of people then a career as a Conference Producer could be for you. A Conference Producer's remit is to develop the topic and programme content for commercial events - events that senior people within that industry area will want to attend - and will pay for the privilege. You'll do lots of research, networking and speaking to gurus in that field - searching out the 'hot topics'. You'll put together the programme content for the event - inviting key industry speakers, and getting likely sponsors involved - liaising with your team on marketing and selling the event - and be the main project lead throughout, through to overseeing the success of the day itself. And what skills do you need to make a good Conference Producer? - research, copywriting, planning and communication skills are key. You will be given a great deal of responsibility from day one, but in return you can expect to be rewarded appropriately. As the first part in a new series of job profiles, this month we asked one of our conference producers to run through his working day...Click here to read about a day in the life of a conference producer
