Summer - Not Such a Silly Season

In the press they call it the 'silly season'. Parliament breaks up, the schools are out and half the office rushes with breakneck speed to the coast and budget airline queues. But in this world of blackberries, wireless internet and globalisation, are we ever really free? Do things really slow down anymore?

Well, a snapshot survey here at Regan & Dean has reflected a yearly world schedule thats a lot more unpredictable than it once was. Because so many managers take their holidays, a lot of major decisions are delayed until September. But the world doesn't stop, offices are busier than ever with the new wave of students and graduate interns. Events are held at the last minute, business's around the world demand the same level of communication as the rest of the year and companies have realised that preparing in the summer makes a big difference for the 'September rush'. For us, it's a time to deal with the unexpected and fill as many, if not more temp roles than other seasons, which often makes us busier than ever!

Here's our advice for working in summer:

  • Plan ahead: who's leaving for holidays and at what time? If you ask who has responsibility and what decisions can be made in advance, things will run smoothly and everyone will appreciate your forethought.
  • Draft in temporary help if you think you need it, or, if it's you that's on holiday, give clear allocation of your duties internally so that all areas of your projects are covered.
  • Find out in advance from your clients when the key decision makers are likely to be away, so you can build any knock on effects into your production schedules.
  • Plan for September: it's renowned for the surge of activity, so use the summer to prepare for it.

Harassment in the workplace - a big change in the law

Everyone knows about harassment in the workplace. For years, bullying or unwanted flirting have been illegal, as has being fired on the basis of your gender, or not hired because of it. This has been fine for people whose working lives are spent surrounded only by co-workers and their own employers. But what about event organisers where a great deal, if not the majority of time may be spent with people who are not employed by your company? Customers, clients and conference guests all make up the working environment and until later this year, if they harass someone else's employee, no one is liable.

That will soon change as a result of the High Court ruling earlier this year that determined the UK government had not properly implemented an EU Directive covering harassment in the workplace. The court held that the current legislation does not go far enough in protecting employee rights, and the Secretary of State must now make changes to remedy the situation. This is because the EU Directive envisaged all workplace discrimination, but UK legislation failed to cover responsibility for 'third party' breaches. Employers will have to think about introducing a policy on how to deal with harassment by clients or customers.

If you feel your company has not put adequate policies in place, now may be the time to look at them. If you’d like further information, click here for a list of (non exhaustive) advice that we've drawn up in partnership with the employment law specialists at Glovers solicitors.

Web 2.0 - making it work for you

In the last newsletter we looked at big examples of web 2.0 in advertising and marketing. This month we look at making it work for you.

The web should be regarded as billions of notice boards and web 2.0 lets you make your own board. But be careful. If you set up a board, you have to imagine it sitting on the desk of your employer or future employer right now, because it really is only a few clicks away. So if you care about how you are perceived now, or might be in the future, be aware of what is attributed to you on the internet.

Web 2.0 doesn't just offer the opportunity to write your own personal advert. Because it’s interactive, it lets you sell yourself on your own terms – the pictures, comments and personal information may show a side of yourself that you are unable to express in a meeting or interview. But the real benefit of the new technology is networking. By moving away from a personal internet site - effectively alone in the vast ocean of other internet sites - a personal space is a platform, connected to all the other platforms of that kind of personal space. By signing up to a site, you join an instant community where all the companies and people are connected by a common thread. Innovation over the last four years has meant we are now able to network with the world from our desks. School friends, old colleagues, even your long lost godparent could just be one internet search away. And that means the scope for business networking is huge.

A day in the life of... A senior PA

Are you a born organiser? Do you have a hankering to be at the heart of a major company, but you don't want the pressure of sitting in that CEOs chair? Do you like working with people and employing all of your organisational skills in a way that will be noticed? A role as a senior PA could be for you.

In the third instalment of our day in the life series, this month we asked one of our senior PAs to run us through a typical day. As the right hand of CEOs and chief executives everywhere, senior PAs are at the heart of the business world. They act as gatekeepers and minders - tracking and arranging meetings, flights, drivers, lunches and even organising personal shopping and finances. A senior PA can also be responsible for arranging conferences, corporate socials and managing the front of house receptionists. The job can demand long hours, but the relationships you build, the breadth of experience and variety of work can bring huge satisfaction. Click here to read more.
