As you sit down in front of your television on a Wednesday evening, you may find yourself watching the contestants on BBC's The Apprentice battle each other in the race to become Sir Alan Sugar's protégé. We are told that each contestant has been picked from a pool of thousands of entrants because of their entrepreneurial flair and extensive business acumen; however, more often than not we are confronted with the painful viewing of the clashing egos of twelve Machiavellian power freaks.

Sugar's recruitment process creates an environment that encourages the contestants to get to the top of the ladder by trampling over everyone below them. Although this definitely makes entertaining viewing - in a real business environment it is all very well being successful - but the ability to work well as part of a team is an essential attribute. Events in the Great Outdoors

If the recent weather has been anything to go by, we could be in for a scorcher of a summer, and consequently one of the biggest summer seasons to date for the outdoor events industry. The UK has seen a massive increase in the frequency and variety of outdoor events in the past few years, from music festivals to open air cinemas. As the 2012 Olympics slowly creeps up on us we will begin to see more events both surrounding the games and as part of the main attraction itself. Event management is already a very popular career choice amongst first jobbers, but it can be a difficult area to get into, especially without experience. One of the best ways to gain the necessary skills is to undertake work experience in the field, and outdoor events are an excellent opportunity for this, especially for students as the majority will take place during their summer holiday. This could mean working for free or for very little money, but if you show initiative you could well be rewarded with extra responsibilities that may help gain a future permanent position.

As the second part of our series of job profiles, this month we asked one of our marketing managers to run through a typical day. Marketing managers, sometimes known as brand or account managers, plan all aspects of an organisation's marketing. As the head of their department, they will research and analyse marketing trends; identify target markets; plan campaigns and develop strategies; manage a team of marketing executives and the budget, as well as monitoring and reporting on the success of campaigns. The job can demand long hours, especially in the lead up to a campaign launch, but the satisfaction of a happy client after a successful campaign is enough reward in itself. Click here to read more.

Netiquette - is yours up to scratch?

Email is possibly the greatest communication tool of our time - it's less intrusive than a phone call and much faster than a letter. However a recent study by the Association of Personal Assistants has revealed that only 1 in 5 PAs feel that emails make their firm more efficient, and that 60% complained that the volume of useless emails they received seriously impeded effectiveness. As a member of the office support team, one of your key roles is ensuring effective communication between managers, colleagues and clients, and these days this will almost certainly be via email. When we pick up the phone, write a letter or even speak face-to-face with someone, we expect them to observe certain rules of behaviour, and the same goes for email. It is therefore important to ensure you come across as you would want to when meeting in person - the added risk with email is that once you hit the send button, you won't have another chance! This well established live events agency are looking for a head of production to join their senior management team to lead, support, mentor and motivate it's team of creative deliverers.
